Michael Lawrence Brown Research Fellowship

These are a two-year post that will be based at Fiona Stanley Hospital and The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Fiona Stanley Hospital Campus. The posts will be 50% clinical and 50% research.

There are two posts that will work together as a ‘job share’ of 1 FTE pre-SET vascular surgery registrar. The intention is that applicants will work on an alternate week basis, one week clinical and one week research.

The research component will involve participation in the ongoing program of research under Professor Toby Richards and the Centre for Research Excellence clinical trials team. 

It is anticipated the applicant will enrol in a higher degree such as the Master of Clinical Research at UWA.

About Us

Professor Richards is the Michael Lawrence Brown Chair of Vascular Surgery based at FSH. He leads the Centre for Research Excellence with an experienced research team committed to attracting, mentoring, and developing in the future of students with world leaders in their fields as mentors.

The team is research intensive in audit and clinical trials within the WA university and hospital sectors as well as globally.  In addition, the team is heading into exciting times with collaborations between UWA & Fiona Stanley Hospital as well as nationally and internationally. The team comprises existing; trial managers, admin support, informatics, and database support, 4 PhD students and 4 Masters students with a network of >150 GCP trained medical students via the STRIVEwa network. Close collaboration exists in UWA and the Australian National Phenome Centre for translational and experimental research.

The successful applicant will join a team with leadership from Professor Toby Richards You will be supported by a senior clinical trials and operations manager for protocol development, ethics and governance submissions. It is expected that the post holder will work collaboratively with existing undergraduate, postgraduate (PhD and Masters), and medical students. Collaborative opportunities exist with international leaders in clinical trials and translational science.

Project Details

We are seeking a driven and motivated junior doctor interest to develop skills in clinical or translational research. A variety of projects are available through the Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) led by Professor Toby Richards

Projects would appeal to trainees in all areas not just specific to Vascular Surgery. Examples are detailed but not limited to: –

  • Carotid Artery Disease and the CREST 2 international trial.
  • Venous Ulcers and the VOLUME observational trial to assess the mechanistic changes in wound healing in response to treatment.
  • AAA biomechanics and the ABLE trial looking at whether 4D CT scanning can be used to predict AAA growth and patient risk.
  • Surgical site infection and the DIVES study to investigate NPWT on lower limb amputation wound healing and the human phenome.
  • POSTvenTT vascular trial building on previous work investigating the impact and effect of iron deficiency and anaemia on patient recovery after major surgery.
  • Collaborative research through the STRIVEwa, TASMAN and international STARsurg networks.

Masters in Clinical Research

The scholarship package will include a living allowance. Domestic students are not required to pay tuition fees, as the enrolment for research-based degrees is funded by the Australian Government Research Training Program.

The two-year degree will be research based and is aligned with current requirements for points towards SET applications. It is anticipated the applicant will complete a minimum of four presentations and a minimum of three publications based around the core project. There are also teaching roles that can be incorporated.

Opportunity will be given to extending a project to PhD
